A powerful series of short and long training courses, that enable you and your team to develop your business and day to day work skills. 

My whole purpose for putting this program together, is to help you the business owner or childcare centre owner, to be able to access material for working with the issues involved in growing and developing your business or centre.

You can go to courses and events that are one, two, or three days in length, or even do a long-term training program. But the problem is, do you get the time to work on and implement the material you learn, when you get back to the office? There is generally a lot of information that you need to work through from the event. Or, you learn something that you may not do for a number of years and you forget it.

I wanted to develop something that enables you to be able to access affordable training based on the issues you are dealing with in the moment. Something that, when the issue happens, you can go and view the material in 10 to 20 minutes and then go and deal with it there and then.

Material that is available to you immediately at The Time Retrieveryour fingertips, 24hrs a day, 365 days a year, when and where you need it.

I also want to ensure that you are working on the longer-term development of your business.

So, this program provides you the training courses as individual components, and also some of these individual courses have been grouped together as long courses, for the future planning and growth of your business.

The courses aren’t just for you, they can be used to help train your team members in a wide array of skills that are required for them to be able to work effectively and efficiently in your business.

You can use these courses in your regular meetings, where a part of the meeting is based on training your team. You can use them in specific training days or training sessions, and they can be used as individual training, where your team members can be setup with access to the course you want them to work on.

Again, my whole aim is to provide you with as much business and work skills training for you and your team, as I can. All of these skills are what I found I needed to develop in myself and my teams, to be successful in the roles I was involved in, and in the services I still provide today.

You will notice, that I mention business and childcare centres, that’s because we have been working with business and childcare owners for many years now, and you will find that although the courses in the program work with generic issues relative to both business and childcare, some of the courses may use childcare centre terminology and examples.

In childcare and business today, recruiting new team members can be quite a challenge.

There are several areas of recruiting that you need to ensure you are very well skilled in, to enable you, to employ good quality people for your business or childcare centre.

One critical area is carrying out the interviews.

How you ask your interview questions when meeting with applicants, will allow you to determine whether the applicant knows what they think you want to hear, or whether they can actually do the job.

Here is an example;

In an interview, we need to learn if the applicant can successfully deal with the situation of an upset or angry parent.

The standard question that most interviewers will ask, is,

Please tell me how you would deal with an angry or upset parent?

The applicant will then tell you, word for word, the process they learnt in their training. Following which, the interviewer will then think, OK, they know how to deal with an angry or upset parent.

The problem here is, just because they can remember what they were taught, does not give you any indication on whether they can actually put it into practice. I have seen many occasions when an employee can tell me how to handle and angry customer, however, when they are confronted by one in reality, they are totally unable to carry out the learned process.

If you are interviewing an applicant and are looking to find out whether they can handle the situation of an angry or upset parent, you need to ask the question in the following manner.

In childcare, there are times when you have to deal with an angry or upset parent!

Could you please think back on a time, when you were in this situation? 

Please tell me, what the problem was? What you Did to Solve it? And What was the outcome?

Through asking the question in this manner, you require them to think back on an actual incident they had to deal with, and then relate the incident and its outcome back to you.

This now tells you how they will handle such a situation, as they have now relayed to you, how they have handled it in the past. Instead of getting a philosophical answer, you get an answer that relates to a real incident.

This is just one of hundreds of different types of questions you can ask when interviewing a job applicant, that is based on the principle, that past performance is a good indication of future performance. If you ask applicants questions that make them tell you how they have performed in the past, you will get a good indication as to how they will perform in the future.

Learning how to ask the right questions in a job interview is critical to you being able to employ high quality people for your business or childcare centre.

When I learned to recruit new employees based on the principle, past performance is a good indicator of future performance, mine and mine team’s recruitment success skyrocketed.

    Should you employ family and friends?

    Should you employ family and friends?

    Employing family and friends has always been an issue in small business. Over the years, I have seen family and friends working OK in businesses, but on the whole, there are generally constant issues.

    Business owners employ family and friends because it is quick and easy to do. They know the person so expect they can work with them without any problems. Then the issues start to arrive, familiarity means the business owner finds it harder to discipline them when they are not happy with their work. They generally let issues slide because they don’t want to confront their friend or family member, whilst, in the mean time the issues grow and so does the resentment.

    One rule of employing people is that they must be better than you at carrying out the role they are employed for. When you just go and employ a friend or family member it is generally done without comparing them with other applicants, so you don’t have the opportunity to see if they are the best available in the market place.

    From observation over the years, another benefit of employing family and friends is that they are generally paid a lower rate. But that’s where the old saying “Pay peanuts, get monkeys” comes from.

    There are a few rules you should follow when considering employing family or friends in your business.

    1. If a position needs to be filled, advertise the role.
    2. If you have a family member or friend that you could employ, interview them along with other applicants. If they come out best in the interview, then they could be employed.
    3. Do not employ a family member or friend if you have not compared them against other applicants.
    4. Provide clear guidelines on the employer/friend relationship. i.e. Work stays at work, social life stays with social life.
    5. If there is a problem with their work, deal with it immediately. Don’t wait.
    6. If their position needs to be terminated, terminate it. Don’t procrastinate.

    Over the years, I have noticed businesses that rarely, if not at all, employ family and friends are significantly more successful than businesses that regularly employ family and friends.

    Business Owners Are Hopeless Recruiters!

    When it comes to recruiting employees, the majority of small business owners are hopeless. When they need to employ someone they;

    • Rush in, place a poorly worded add in recruiting sites, newspapers etc.
    • Quickly race through the interviewing process, asking questions that don’t get any information on the applicant’s true abilities.
    • Spend the next 3 months complaining about the person until they eventually let them go and start the process again.

    Why does this happen? Because recruiting good quality employee’s requires specific skills that most business owners have never taken the time to learn.

    Slow the process down – Even though you need the position filled quickly, it is important to get the right person for the long-term rather than anyone, who you then need to replace in a month or two’s time.

    Follow the proper recruiting process– Go and learn how to go about recruiting an employee properly. It doesn’t take that long to learn and the benefits to your business will be enormous.

    Interview questions – The interview is the critical part of the process, asking questions that are worded in a manner that requires the applicant to provide you with actual past experiences will give you an indication of the applicant’s true suitability for the role.

    Don’t outsource your recruiting to recruitment companies, the team building process starts at the recruiting stage and the better you know the role, the better you can select the right person for the role. You’re not just sourcing a person to fill a hole and then get paid for doing so.

    Recruiting is a skill that very few business owners have been trained in, take the time to get yourself trained and make the task of recruiting quality people for your business a lot easier.
